Hannover has quietly transformed into a specialty coffee hotspot over the past decade. Once dominated by traditional bakeries and mainstream chains, the city now thrives with independent cafés and micro-roasters committed to quality. At Paso Paso, we’re proud to be part of this vibrant community. Join us as we explore the evolution of Hannover’s coffee culture—from its early pioneers to today’s exciting cafés.
The Early Days: 24Grad and Panama Kaffee Lead the Way
Hannover’s specialty coffee movement began with passionate coffee enthusiasts who set new standards for quality and taste. 24Grad Café und Kaffeerösterei emerged as one of the first specialty coffee roasters in the city. This roastery and café at the Engelbosteler Damm became a central meeting point around Hannovers’ Nordstad. Serving shoppers in both Kröpcke and List, Panama Kaffee has been around for twenty years focused on espresso drinks and self-roasted bean sales in shopping streets.
Expansion and Diversification: New Cafés Bring Fresh Perspectives
As coffee enthusiasts in Hannover sought even more diverse experiences, a new generation of cafés began to appear.
East Coffee
Located on Lister Meile 52, EastCoffee quickly won over locals with its attentive, personalized service and wide range of coffee. With a wide range of coffee, liquorice and craft products the owner Ronny has something for anyone who comes through his doors. Since the first day we launched Paso Paso, Ronny has trusted in our story and quality and ensures to always carry all of Paso Paso’s coffee. We love how all our bags line up for a colour explosion and Ronny is always ready to steer coffee-lovers in the right way to ensure the coffee matches their expectations. On the espresso grinder you can enjoy our Café de La Casa - or house coffee build with the Grand Peaberry Washed from Diego Robelo and the Natural coffee from Hester and Dawit’s Guji farm.
V17 & Wood Grouse Coffee
One of the first major influencers was V17, established in 2015 in the lively district of Hannover-Linden. Known for its hand brewing methods and light roasts V17 quickly became a beloved destination for coffee purists. One of the owners, Arno, also roasts his own coffee as well as featuring well known roasters from the European specialty coffee scene.
The Present: A Thriving and Diverse Coffee Scene
Today, Hannover’s specialty coffee culture is richer and more diverse than ever before. New players have entered the scene, each offering a unique perspective:
171 Kaffeeladen
A cozy café on Lutherstr. 57 fulfilled the dreams of the residents of Südtad where a good specialty coffee was missing until Paul and Christin opened in early 2024. This tranquil coffee shop blends in perfectly in the neighborhood that features wide streets with leafy trees. You can sit in front of the big window or take your coffee to go for a stroll through the neighbourhood up to the famous Machsee lake. For 171 Kaffeeladen we developed their house blend called ‘Café del Sur’ using two natural coffees from the Syoum Family in Ethiopia and Silvio Sánchez in Nicaragua. A deep chocolatey sweetness with a hint of fruitiness comes through in the perfect espresso and blends harmoniously with milk based drinks such as flat-whites and cappuccinos as well. Besides coffee drinks from the La Marzocco espresso machine you can also pick up beans for at-home-brewing or venture into the world of coffee brewing with the selection of colourful brewers on their shelves.
Vorveg
Vorveg merges specialty coffee with a forward-thinking, plant-based menu. Its minimalist design, and commitment to sustainability make it a standout example of Hannover’s innovative coffee scene. Here owner and chef Florian makes vegan dishes and cakes from scratch with a beloved brunch platter that fills the small restaurant to the brim every weekend. On the espresso machines we feature our Corazón Oscuro Dark Roast that cuts through milk like no other. This blend from our ‘Two Diego’s - Robelo and Baraona, forms the base for the oat beverages served here and as a thick as well. For filter coffee lovers there is the crowd-favourite Bourbon Elite Washed from Diego Baraona on the Mocca Master.
Caffè Bar B
Just outside of Hannover, in the small town of Bredenbeck, Benny launched ‘Specialty Coffee Auf ‘m Dorf’. Roughly translating to specialty coffee in the village - it 100% lives up to that promise. After driving or cycling through the meadows surrounding Hannover you can see the ‘Deister Mountain Range’ creep up. On the foothills of this small natural reserve you will find Caffè Bar B. Located in the old general store, this shop is slowly becoming a destination in it-self for coffee, nature and cycling lovers from Hannover. Benny combines craft and passion to serve up creative cakes from his small bakery and a range of espresso-based drinks featuring custom blends. Together we develop the Deister Kaffee - Bar and Espresso Blend. A homage to the natural surroundings and Benny’s own heritage. This blend uses equal parts of Diego Robleo’s peaberry and Silvio’s natural catuai. The resulting taste is a balanced and modern approach to espresso that has found his spot outside city life too. This spot is especially beloved with cyclists that refuel before heading over the mountains or back into the city. Those willing to carry the extra weight pack a bag of coffee too.
